Mary Joy
Metamorfosi, 2020

triptych, oil on canvas
30”H x 24”W (each)

ARTWORK STATEMENT:

This is a time of intense change and upheaval, as we weather a global pandemic and the shedding of outdated political models. This is a triptych, divided into three parts that showcase the beauty of the natural world, the feminine principle, and the transformation process. The paintings feature the metamorphosis of lepidoptera and flora with a central emphasis on the chrysalis phase. The breakdown, gathering forces and emergence of a transcendent and beautiful form are the three phases shown in the paintings. The works feature a female human form that serves as a vessel to the flora and fauna. It is my hope to contribute a message of growth, transformation, and the emergence of a new, brighter phase of existence.
