ARTWORK STATEMENT:

The Fragile Container is a 20thC. sewing kit, repurposed here as a sort of ‘treasure box’ of a tender planet Earth. I imagine it’s unfolded and expanding function as a symbol of the ever-increasing awareness and appreciation of our own fragility in the cosmos. Multi-tired and gilded planes of value and understanding bound together in a rather tenuous form, but capable of being drawn in, secured, and protected as needed. MMG, 2021

Artist Bio:

Mark M. Garrett (b. 1959) is a San Francisco-based artist who employs abstraction and an explorative eye across various media. The artist often combines collage, assemblage, paint, gilt, cast paper pulp, repurposed found objects, and ephemera. New worlds emerge in oddly emotional interpretations of once-familiar places. In both two and three dimensions, this artwork shifts and evolves from identifiable land masses to new and potentially uncertain places of possibility.
