ARTWORK STATEMENT:

My interdisciplinary practice explores mundane and quotidian themes that structure daily life. I’m interested in everyday experiences that construct our habitual engagement with the world and how such habits often prevent us from paying attention to our surroundings. My work draws attention to the economic, social conditions in the documentation/representation of the changing urban landscape, and touches upon issues of gentrification, class, ethnicity and community. Searching for meaning in ordinary things and everyday scenes, my work is also an investigation of how perception and objects interact with each other.

Artist Bio:

Brett Amory’s multidisciplinary practice is based on the intersection of quotidian and habitual engagements with the everyday world. His works consider moments of visual perception that precede interpretation. Working primarily in painting and installation, he uses the ordinary as a vehicle for extending the familiar into the realms of the unfamiliar. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including at the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
